I thought it was time I finally got on and made a regular post. I have enjoyed re-posting interesting articles about animals mostly, and hope everyone has enjoyed them as much as I have. I know several of you have.
Hubby and I are members of Holton, Kansas’ Lions Club. Yesterday our club held our first Annual Golf Tournament as a fund raiser. Hubby, I and a few others were asked to cook brats and hotdogs, and serve chips and water to the six teams in the tournament. As this was our first tournament, we didn’t know how many to look for so we started out with 120 brats, 80 hotdogs, 120 bags of chips, 240 16 ounce bottles of water. We even got to cook the brats on a brand new grill. Someone else had already used it before us, but I think we were only the second, or maybe third group that was able to use it since being installed. When the Holton Country Club tried the clean the old grill, it was stated that it disintegrated. Must have been pretty well used. I am very glad it fell apart for the owners and not while we were cooking. 🙂
These are a couple of several signs that the club had made up from the sponsors. The signs were placed on each of the nine holes of the golf course. These were placed on what I think is hole nine by the pond closest to the Country Club and our grill. I was going to get pictures of all of the signs at their holes. I will explain later in the post why I didn’t get around to that.
This was the nice canopy built over the grill, so we were out of the light rain. Good thing the wind was very, very light. Otherwise we would have been a little wet.
Since there was only six teams of four, we had more than enough food for the players and helpers. And as an added bonus for us workers, one of the ladies helping out was gracious enough to get up at 5:30am and fix us some homemade cinnamon rolls. They were still warm and soooooo good! She makes the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had. It was a nice breakfast and the lady who runs the bar had coffee on. It made for a great breakfast.
We started cooking some of the brats and hotdogs about mid morning and placed them in a foil pan on one end of the grill to keep warm until the teams came in to eat. While we waited Hubby and one other man had a beer and brat and we were all talking and having a good time. About 11:30 I noticed Hubby had sat down in a chair and had his eyes closed. I didn’t think too much of it and jokingly said wake up. We had gotten up pretty early to get things loaded in the truck, and Hubby wanted to check on the cows as we are getting close to having a new bunch of calves. He has been re-retired from his part time job for the last couple or three weeks and we both have been busy playing catch up on several things that needed to be done around the farm and another Lions Club fund raiser, a pancake feed. I walked close to Hubby and he opened his eyes and told me to sit next to him. He said he had some sort of a spell. I took a closer look at him and realized he was very pale. I touched his neck and face and he was very cool to the touch. I got him up and into the building and he was a little clammy under his shirt. I was getting scared now and went out to say something to the others and they said I should take him to the hospital. We spent the next two and a half hours there.
He told the hospital staff that he had sat down and felt nauseous, felt like he was going to pass out and his vision went kind of gray. And that he started to get a headache. They asked him questions and made him raise his eye brows, smile make faces, and we both smiled, but they said it was silly but they were checking for signs of a stroke. They did a blood test for diabetes, ran an EKG, and took a chest x-ray. His blood pressure was a little low and his heart rate was in the upper 50s. It should have been 60 or higher. After everything was said and done he started to look better and he was able to recline and close his eyes while we waited for test results.
Finally after waiting and waiting, they came and said that he most likely had an episode of Vasovagal Syncope. Why are medical terms so hard to say? And spell. Anyway it is commonly known as fainting and is a temporary loss of consciousness. It occurs when the blood flow to the brain is reduced. Good thing he was already sitting down. All of Hubby’s test came back okay, and when they rechecked his blood pressure and heart rate it was back to normal. The nurse even said that he could have anything salty that he wanted, but no caffeine for the night. Of course by the time we left the hospital, we missed out on the door prizes given to the teams and the clean up. One couple did bring our cooler and left over hotdogs and water to us and teased him about just wanting to get out of cleaning up. We did have to laugh since we were more relaxed and not having to deal with anything more serious.
I have had episodes like this a time or two, and now I know why. I just thought it was because I was trying to do something more than I could handle and because I am overweight and out of shape. Which is a very probable reason and it is a scary feeling. Now I have a name for it. I can’t pronounce it, but I have a name. I tried to put up a couple of links, but couldn’t get them to work. Have a wonderful Sunday evening and a great week.
Stay Safe and God Bless!

Looks like it was a lot of fun. 🙂

Hit send by mistake. Too bad about you! But I’ve never heard of that condition. I’ll have to do some research. Be careful!

It was scary for me and when Tom had his spell. I don’t think I got pale but not sure. I couldn’t get the links to work for some reason. The Mayo Clinic had something. Have a good week.

Thanks for sharing the photos of the event, Cheryl! Looks like a good time was had by all … until your husband, poor guy, had to go to the hospital. By thank God everything turned out all right — and I’m glad you shared this information with us because now I know more about this almost unpronouncable “Vasovagal Syncope”! Take care, 🙂

I can’t pronounce the first word especially. If you can’t pronounce it, it must be serious. 😀 I am just glad Hubby is okay. He really looked very pale. He is rarely sick sick. I hope this will help someone else who may have this problem. Have a great week Debra. 🙂
