We have been needing some rain and we finally started getting some the last few weeks. The first week or so in April we only got about .3 inch of rain. Just a teaser. Then on April 18, we got a good inch of rain. A good start. April 20 another inch of rain. April 24 about .55 inches of rain. We kind of thought it was coming in a fairly timely fashion.
We had been getting weather warnings of storms moving in for several days. On April 26 it was pretty calm about 7am. It had been pretty hot and sticky during the day on April 25, so I had a few windows open as it cooled off during the evening. It was nice and calm as I was just waking up. Out of nowhere a big blast of wind came screaming through the open window by the bed and I thought it was going to blow off my curtains. I jumped up to shut the windows all through the house and had to pick up some things off the floor. The swing on the north porch threatened to come through our screen and window. Then it rained. A whooping .3 inches! Another teaser I thought and so much for the storms. After it calmed a bit I went out and put the swing up high on it’s chains and was glad I did so.
As afternoon approached, there were wind warnings and flood warnings in several counties. And tornado warnings within a 60 mile range of us, and then in Topeka which is only about 30 miles from us. It had moved as far as Hoyt, Kansas which is about 10-15 minutes from us. There was a lot of wind and lightening. Thunder and rain. We finally got about 2.4 inches that night.
Then this morning the sun was shining when I first got up, but it didn’t stay out long. The clouds were already present and moving closer. By early afternoon Tom had just left to run into Holton for a few things he had to do. It started rumbling and then the rain came fast and hard. It took me a second to realize that the rain sounded really heavy. I looked and it was hailing. It hailed several minutes and was small in the beginning. But it gradually got bigger. It ranged from pea size to about a quarter size. My horses and donkey were running, stopping and moving around trying to get away from it. Why they didn’t get into the shed, I don’t know. I couldn’t go out to help them. I just had to watch as they kept moving around.
It finally stopped, but started again. It didn’t last as long the second time thankfully.
This is what it looked like on the south side of the house.
This is a nickle in my hand.
And by the time it was done the first time, some pieces were about a quarter size.
It has been calm since the second round. We got about 1.3 inches of rain. I think we are good now for a couple of weeks. There has been some flooding around in some areas, but nothing here as far as I know. We will have to go out and check the fences to make sure no trees have fallen on them. I hope the weather is perfect wherever you all are. Goodnight.
Stay Safe and God Bless!
